As a 1998 graduate from Stanford University in English and Economics, I was a Music Director, Business Director, and Overall Tool for Stanford's R&B, Motown & soul a cappella group, Everyday People. I grew up in both Southern California and Taipei, Taiwan. While growing up, I listened to all sorts of music and began singing at an early age, mostly in school choirs and musicals, although I also did some competitive singing with Italian arias and madrigals (WHY do schools make kids do that? Are they on crack?) I was first introduced to a cappella by my middle school choir teacher (not the one who made us sing madrigals), who played Spike Lee's Do It A Cappella and that pretty much sold me.
I sang with Everyday People for five years: I directed the group for two years, business directed for one year, told everyone what to do for another year, and arranged tons of music throughout. I ended up co-producing all three of the albums I sang in. Wail, the first a cappella enhanced CD, got nominated for 2 best soloist CARA's. 2648 West Grand Blvd, which went on to win Runner-up First Place CARA's for Best Song, Best Soloist, and Best Album (co-produced by Ethan Rikleen & myself). Just this past June, EP's current director & I co-produced EP JONES, which we are very proud of as well.
I am currently working in San Francisco as a Web Technologist (don't ask what that means) and trying to make enough money to buy furniture for my new house. I spend my time searching for another group as amazing as EP to sing with, imagining that I'm the first Asian-American "rapper-slash-actress", and listening to Mary J. Blige, D'Angelo, and of course my girl, Lauryn Hill.
