Mike is a founding member of Columbia University's coed a cappella phenomenon Nonsequitur. His arrangement of Dido's Here with Me won the 2004 Contemporary A Cappella Publishing award for Best Collegiate Arrangement. Mike was also featured in the 2009 documentary Sounds Good To Me about the making of college a cappella. More recently, Mike was named #55 on The A Cappella Blog's Cool 100.
Mike also holds a Bachelor's degree in computer science from Columbia and a Master's degree in information systems from NYU. Among other things, this qualifies him to handle the technical operations of RARB, which he happily took over from the venerable Seth Golub in mid-2011. When Mike is not wading through ancient Perl code, he's working tirelessly to keep things running smoothly, devising new and interesting ways for RARB to pay for its hosting costs, and crafting his grand plans for a redesign.
Mike has become an a cappella connoisseur over the years and will gladly offer his opinions to anyone who will listen. It was this tendency that led him to become a RARB reviewer in the first place. Even though as technical director he no longer writes reviews, he does listen to every single album sent to RARB. (Really.)
Mike's musical tastes include just about anything with chords and a melody, though he counts fellow pianists Ben Folds, Bruce Hornsby, Alicia Keys and Regina Spektor among his favorites. He particularly enjoys anything that uses the voice in new and interesting ways, a cappella or otherwise. He also continues to harbor a love of all things Broadway left over from his musical theater days, especially Stephen Sondheim.
In his other life, Mike works as an IT consultant with TriTek Solutions. He currently lives in The A Cappella Hotbed of the South (also known as Durham, NC) with his wife Inna and dog Zoe.
