I remember my first taste of full out a cappella was listening to The Nylons "Kiss Him Goodbye" and singing along on a bus trip while I was in high school. I was hooked. I even took my nearly worn out copy of Seamless with me when I travelled to Africa and played it every day.
I've been involved actively in the a cappella world since 1990. I sang with the collegiate groups His-N-Hers and Carolina Tar Heel Voices at the UNC-Chapel Hill and with the semi-pro groups The Accidentals [of North Carolina] and hearsay during my graduate school years.
I was one of the first "ambassadors" for CASA the Contemporary A Cappella Society (formerly of America) back in the early '90s, when we were still reading the Collegiate A Cappella News and most of the people used the classified ads to hook up with others while on tour.
I've relocated to Memphis, TN to work at a big fundraising organization for a well-respected Children's research hospital. After living in North Carolina for 37 years, this is going to be great adventure. The move also means that I've now joined a Contemporary A Capella League group called DeltaCappella. The guys are awesome.
Though, I do miss singing with The Seven Deadly Bibs in North Carolina.Currently, I am one of the producers of the mega-fantastic SOJAM! and as a producer of CASA's sing series. Previously, I served on the Board of Directors for the Alliance of A Cappella Initiatives as a jack-of-all-trades and the Executive Producer of the Sing series of recordings. I'm FOTS#1 (that's friend of the show) and special guest for KNC 88.1's radio show All Things A Cappella on Sundays from Noon-2pm.
I was the Associate Editor of the Contemporary A Cappella News magazine for more than a decade.
I've been involved with the ICCAs since 1996. The early years were spent as a coach and emcee and I eventually became a regional producer for the South in 1998 until the Spring of 2004. I loved every minute of it. I gave up my producer role and now report from the sidelines and occassionaly judge other competitions. It was time to pass the torch! Yes, I miss it, but it was for the best. Now I focus on other aspects of the community.
I served as president of the Triangle Gay Men's Chorus for three years. Was Artistic Director of an African American theatre company called New Traditions Theatre where I directed an award-wining production of "The America Play". I sang in two professional benefit concerts for various AIDS foundations New York City--most recently performing with Ben Vereen, Rosie O'Donnell, Cameron Mathison, Billy Porter, Terry Mann, Charles Busch and Kate Shindle in a production of Pippin, and Jai Rodruigez, John Tartaglia, Julia Murney and Norm Lewis for the NYC-premiere of Children of Eden.
