A note to the reader/listener: These scores simply serve as a general
guideline. I will keep them in mind as much as possible, and try not
to stray from these criteria, yet no one's perfect! I hope these
guidelines may also be referred to in case I can't touch on
all aspects of a song.
- 10
- NEAR-PERFECT SONG! (I won't call anything perfect, because
that's a matter of opinion) This is something that will catch
my attention the first time I listen to it, and something that
I'll want to hear again and again. Also, if a piece doesn't
even sound like "a-cappella" and more like instruments, it is
more deserving of a great score. It should be fairly in tune,
creative, a solid arrangement and attract the listener to
picking out voice parts.
- 9
- This should be an excellent song, and perhaps it will only have
minor flaws that keep it from receiving a 10, like a note here
and there, or perhaps unsettled rhythms or chords.
- 8
- A great song to listen to, but perhaps I'll have some
constructive criticism- room for slight improvement, etc.
Songs may not have good balance, may be out of tune, may need
better syllables, or need somewhat of a stronger soloist at
various points.
- 7
- Still something that I would want to listen to numerous times,
but perhaps with consistent problems in the piece. This will
relate to the above mentioned ideas, also including to perhaps
an arrangement that's not very creative, or repetition in the
accompaniment, etc.
- 6
- There will definitely be things that I like about a piece to
get a 6, but I will also have something to say about "room for
improvement." This may be anything from needing tighter
harmonies, more rhythmic stability, or better tuning.
- 5
- Of course, a '5' is a tough score, because it simply represents
"average." There may be good qualities about the song, but
there will be just as many things that I feel would need work
as things that are commendable.
- 4
- I probably wouldn't recommend a song with this score as
something to rush out and buy. It would probably be best
explained as a song where notes are just sung, and not much
else is put into the song.
- 3
- This would be if I feel a song needed more work before actually
recorded. I think this will be the type of song that anyone
might cringe at once or twice while listening, but still
maintains a semblance of structure.
- 2
- For a song to get a score this low on the scale, it has to have
major flaws, such as tuning, lack of any dynamics, poor
balance, a boring arrangement, and/or other qualities along the
same level.
- 1
- A song (or album) that I wouldn't recommend ANYONE
buying, no matter what musical tastes a listener has. This
should be a rare score; only if a piece is completely
unpolished and sounds unrehearsed.
