24K Magic / Downtown Mashup shimmers with pop production, which is not surprising, given that it’s sourced from Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs. These covers sound so true to their originals that a casual listener might be hard-pressed to notice that these are all-vocal tracks. The imitation is impressive, but what makes this mashup so special is how seamlessly and effortlessly Fowler switches between the two songs. In a verse of Downtown, he transitions back to a chorus of 24K Magic, then he barely starts a 24K verse again before dabbling back to Downtown for a few lines and then back to 24K. It’ll make your head spin if you’re attached to either song, but as a new, derivative work, it’s magic.
This track is 100% Fowler — as he says on his YouTube intro track, he "really enjoy[s] the sound of [his] own voice". As with everything else he's done, 24K Magic / Downtown Mashup is all sung, recorded, and mixed by Fowler, and he stars in its video as well. (By now you've seen a million Brady Bunch-style videos, but Fowler is having so much palpable fun singing these songs that the energy feels even more amped-up just by watching multiple versions of himself dance on screen all at once). Even though each song is true to the original, Fowler really makes the mashup his own, and this track is a fun way to get the best parts of both songs.
