In my previous glowing review of Inside Voices' first single, I proclaimed that "I eagerly await the group's sophomore single or debut album." Well, the semi-pro group delivered on this promise with a new single, Evacuate the Dancefloor, a high-energy chart that had me moving and grooving on my couch while writing.
The chart infuses Cascada's 2009 dance-pop hit with snippets of other contemporaneous songs one might have heard in clubs, at parties, or scholastic dances, including Lady Gaga's Just Dance and Britney Spears' Till the World Ends. I appreciate arranger Mathew Price choosing to feature small portions of these additional songs rather than trying to create a medley of songs with similar tempos — it helps to break up what could have easily been a one-note arrangement while keeping the audience's attention focused on the primary song.
Other smart, calculated musical decisions also pay off for the group. Price showcases the many talented vocalists of the group who switch off lead soloist duties. And Joey Berkant provides a nuanced version of the expected groove without pulling focus. The group sings build-ups and small crescendos well, though I still would have liked even more dynamic contrast with perhaps a couple more big, loud moments or a really sparse or soft moment on the track. Mixing by Ed Boyer and mastering by Bill Hare add that shimmer of post-production filters one expects from this era of pop music without detracting from the musicality and vocal timbres of the singers.
Now that Inside Voices has produced another great single, maybe we'll get an EP or full album next?
