Come on now! Not since Deja Blue from Duke University released its version of this song some 20+ years ago has anyone touched their greatness. And then comes Pitch Slapped in the year of our Beyoncé 2025 with this ode to Aaliyah (R.I.P.).
Isaiah Thomas is doing his thing here again, the arranger doing the most with some strong voices, sublime harmonies, and intricate and interesting rhythmic patterns. His approach to arranging pop R&B with a jazz flair is commendable and beyond reproach. He simply is the man. And his latest with Pitch Slapped is just another notch in an infinite belt loop.
The group delivers. And delivers. Annnnndddd dddeeeelllivvvveeeerrrrs. Sonically, this is some of the best sounding music that I've heard from the group in a while. This track made me just sit and listen and giggle. I giggle when shit's good, and song eventually made my sides hurt.
And what does one say about the otherworldly voice of Tyler Christian? There is an effortlessness to their voice whether it's in the silk lows or the waterfall ease of cascading down runs. What the who? And I try not to gender-comment too often, but as a male-sounding non-binary person, Christian's tenor coloring to the solo adds just an extra bit of ferocious freshness to the track.
The only fault with the single is that it ends so abruptly. I get it, but I don't think it accomplishes its goal. That's unfair for the group to do that to me, and yet it's also like getting mad at salt for being salty. Are You That Somebody who should be listening to this track 24/7?
