Take 7 from Winter Park High School released a calming and empowering balm for this troubling time with a stellar track for tumultous 2020, Have God.
Original singer/songwriter (yep, in high school) Emilee Algarin has an earthy elegance to her voice — subtly breathy in yearning sections, effortlessly commanding in the more direct passages. Algarin sounds like a younger Natalie Maines from the The Chicks and I'm living my best life. She sings with a conviction that is replicated in the uplifting lyrics about having one's spirituality buoy you through life. I took it as a simple ode to faith — whatever it is that you, the listener, may believe — and letting that be the bedrock on which you go forward through life.
Much kudos should be lauded onto two other women who were instrumental in delivering such an amazing track. Katherine Bodor's compelling arrangement is nuanced and substanial. She was able to make the song complex without being complicated. Bodor's expertise created moments of pure joy in which the singers freely express themselves. The group infuses the arrangement with a warmth and maturity that is both grounded and soaring. The near perfect blend in the background supports the jagged imperfections in Algarin's emotinal delivery that when combined makes me weep. And much praise to Angela Ugolini, whose deft touch behind the mixing board aligns completly with the drive and determination of Algarin's lyrics and singing.
