Medleys can be hard to pull off, but ShadowVox makes these two religious holiday tunes seem as though they were made for each other. The Wisconsin-based male quintet moves from the pious, sweet Jesus, Born On This Day to the jazzy What a Wonderful Child with such ease, you'd think this is the way the songs were originally intended to be performed.
Their voices are impeccable, and the performance is spot-on, but I still can't quite justify calling this song a "5". This track would be a welcome addition to anyone's Christian holiday playlist, but it just feels like it's missing a hair of warmth or a peek inside ShadowVox's personality. The choice of songs will appeal to a limited audience — there's a lot of talk about Jesus and God here — but, to the rest of the a cappella world, I'd suggest keeping the name ShadowVox on your radar until they release something with more universal appeal.
Still, there's something to be said for a group that performs exceedingly well within a certain niche, and ShadowVox delivers the goods with this medley.
One last tip: make sure you listen to this with headphones of some kind — Joshua Harrison's gorgeous bass will resonate down to the bottom of your soul, and that alone is worth hearing.
