New group SOS has released a cover of TikToker Tate McRae's song Greedy. This cover successfully mirrors the sonic landscape of the song. However, it fails to translate successfully into an a cappella hit due to arrangement and production issues.
Arrangers Saul de Anda and Alex Zubillaga adhere closely to the original track and the group does a good job imitating it with a rich sound and texture. Unfortunately, that creative decision also leads to some of the recording's drawbacks. McRae's song is quite vibey; that is, atmospheric and setting a mood without being the center of attention. But a cappella tracks need more arc and play in the arrangement to be memorable, so this arrangement feels static.
In addition, McRae's track uses a number of filters and effects, but you can still hear her diction and she's the most present part of the track. Somewhere in the recording and post-production process for this cover, the vocals of SOS's three soloists — Jacie Nisperos, Rebekah Morris, and Sophia Bonasso, who all do a great job channeling McRae's sound — became muted, making it difficult to hear their diction. In addition, they feel too quiet in the balance of the track, particularly during the choruses when the background vocals almost drown them out.
Making these sorts of creative decisions related to arranging and production with an a cappella listening audience in mind can help SOS move to the next level of recording.
