Grateful is the lead single and title track from Rebirth 7's 2022 debut album. It is a simple and unassuming song that shows the potential for stellar original work from this religious septet from Ghana.
Interestingly enough, it is the universality of the lyrics that is the saving grace of the song as most of the message doesn't have to tie-back to any specific religion: you can enjoy the song as a song, and not for spiritual guidance. The music of the track is a little too simplistic for my tastes as the arrangement isn't very engaging or memorable overall. The arrangement does what it is supposed to (support the lyrics and melody), but that is about it. The first tenor singing "wahnowahno" over verse two piqued my interest for a moment. There is a rich earthiness to the group's overall sound, so I wish Rebirth 7 had taken more chances and been a bit more daring by utilizing the seven distinct voices a lot better.
As stated, it's a great attempt at an original song. I am grateful for what Rebirth 7 is bringing to the a cappella table.
