What's better than fantastic? Listening to the latest incarnation of Musae perform one of the saddest and sexiest songs of the year. Amnesia is the slow jam of utter heartache, and these ladies tug on every last heartstring you have.
"Rich" and "evocative" are the only two words that adequately describe the experience of hearing this song. Rich is in the sound, production, and texture of the performance. Musae's version strips out the garish symphonic/electronic quality of the original and replaces it with a natural earthiness that better supports the terrifying admission of love's end.
Perfect blend is a trademark of Musae; couple this with the warmth and maturity of each of the voices and you have the deluxe edition of a song. The multi-layered arrangement and masterful musicianship evoke the frustrating loss of a relationship gone wrong. Which is ironic, because the music suggests the positive rekindling of a relationship. And they skate this dynamic wonderfully – just listen to the overlapping lyrics of the bridge and you'll understand their mesmerizing ability.
My only quibble is that I wish the song had a stronger ending; the last word is "insane" and what I really got was "forlorn". I wish Musae had broken from the original and really driven home that crazy insanity called love.
