Sound Off A Cappella brings power and vocal drama to its first released single, Take Me to Church. Faithful to the original, but with a fresh gospel choir undercurrent, the music is in fine form from this new professional Boston group.
If this is the group's starting place, "amen" indeed. The sensitive arrangement manipulates volume and control so well — frequently dampening the sound before blowing it open — which creates such a nice frame for lead Brendan MacFadgen. Arranger Rusty Epstein gives this group a lot to work with, and the singers deliver with inspired dynamic swells and passion.
It seems hard for Sound Off to fail: skilled musicians with heaps of a cappella experience, and an in-house mixer (James Cannon sings in this group). Hopefully Sound Off won't just perform well within the Top 40 realm though, but lead and inspire with clever reinventions and solid songwriting, too.
