Delivered by an arresting lead, Redefined's take on Pompeii is pleasantly constructed and a stronger earworm than the original. Not bad for a first single.
I use "constructed" here because without leaning on studio effects, Pompeii just wouldn't make it. Recording engineer/vocal artist/former group member Dieter Schaaf gives Redefined a wonderful sonic playground while keeping the vocals authentic and immediate. I'm impressed enough to keep tabs on this dude and I hope his reach grows in the broader a cappella scene.
Three arrangers are credited for this single. This approach could raise eyebrows in our circle, but with creativity and consistency quite audible, it all works out. The piece is instantly recognizable, but leaves enough space to take a few new turns, and still gives soloist Connor Smith a platform for his soaring, locked-in vowels.
Redefined also released an extremely professional music video for this single, so check that out, too. Solid music from a solid group. Enjoy!
