MICappella produces a yearly track to celebrate Singapore's National Day Parade. This year's gift is a cover of the theme song Here We Are by Charlie Lim, Kit Chan, and The Island Voices. And it's every bit of the bubbly goodness that we've come to expect from this professional sextet. There's an added bonus of the MICaKids being included on the track — what a wonderful way of showing unity, love, and support by unifying the group through this future generation of performers. The stellar production value is just icing on the cake. This is a group of people who know how to energize and engage every emotion through music. They are professionals in every sense of the word, and it shows through every note uttered on Here We Are.
Tay Kexin and Calin Wong are the real standouts on the track. This soprano/alto power duo makes the track soar. Kexin's keen soprano shines with impeccable placement and coloring. You just want to sit and bask in the melodic lines and can't help but smile. In support, Wong's warmth and more earthy alto bring the comfortability of your childhood best friend coming for a visit. You know what to expect and she delivers. And that's not to say that the guys, Juni Goh and Eugene Yip, aren't great on their lines; they bring an additional energy that makes the song great. It's just that this version highlights the talent and depth of the women a lot more. And my gosh, Wong's daughter Evey nearly steals the entire song from the whole group. Look out for this young diva in the near future.
While I prefer The Island Voices' more subdued cover of the song overall as a listening experience (which is already meta for covering a song that you originated, wow), MICappella's is a beautiful ode to its country and an uplifting moment in the world's current time of darkness.
