Bob McSwain

Bob McSwain's RARB Bio

My first experience with a cappella music occurred in high school while on a school band trip to a festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. The entertainment for the bands was the Yale Whiffenpoofs. The young men looked and sounded like they were having a blast. I told my band director that one day I'd love to sing in a group like that. Little did I know that I would be involved for most of my life in the same type music.

My music background is both in vocal and instrumental. Vocally, I've sung in a multitude of groups: Barbershop quartets and choruses, contemporary quartets, sacred quartet/quintet for 15 years, and choral groups of all kinds. Since 2013 I have been the CASA Ambassador for the Carolinas. Instrumentally, I've played trumpet most of my life and have attempted to learn the piano with moderate success.

As a writer I have covered NASCAR and other forms of motorsports in the Charlotte, N.C. Area. I enjoy camping, Photoshop, ham radio, being a computer geek. and riding 1 of my 3 scooters. To pay for all this, I worked at IBM for 31 years selling software and upon retiring started a photography business shooting weddings.

Since becoming involved in the Contemporary A Cappella Society I have judged quarter and semi-final ICCAs, served as a preliminary and final CARA judge, judged the 1st AUSACA Australian A Cappella Awards, and previously wrote reviews for RARB. I am currently the CASA Ambassador for the Carolinas.

I attended Statesville, NC High School where I sang in the Glee Club, and was twice selected to the All-State Chorus. I sat 1st chair 1st seat in the trumpet section and was selected to the All-State band for 3 years. I graduated from North Carolina State University, where I was a member of the Marching Band, British Brass Band, Jazz / Stage band. I was also a founding member of the NCSU Pipe and Drums (Yes … I played bag pipes).

I'm looking forward to giving y'all hints about what's good and what's … ummm … less than good. Don't hesitate to write if you think my music player needs new recharging.
